Survey Definitions (as we see it).
Insurance or Lender Survey.
This is a limited type of survey that is intended to assist insurance underwriters and lending institutions make decisions as to what type of risk a particular vessel is. The survey has two primary purposes: 1) to identify the vessel, it's equipment, condition, and general value, and 2) to identify defects, damages, or hazardous conditions that pose a potential threat to the safety of the vessel and it's passengers, or any other such condition that is likely to result in damage or loss. This type of survey is not intended to be used for pre-purchase decisions by prospective buyers because it does not go into the same depth that a pre-purchase survey does and usually does not require a sea trial. This survey is also known as a condition and value survey or C&V.
Pre Purchase Survey.
This is the same survey as above except that it will 1) require a vessel to be removed from the water to examine all running gear, 2) inspect below the waterline and 3) a sea trial. These extras usually are at the expense of the prospective buyer and may require the consent and the attendance of the owner during these operations. This survey will take somewhere in the 6-8 hour range to complete and approximately 48 hours to deliver the finished copy to the person requesting the service. It is this type of survey that will take some extra effort on the part of the prospective buyer and the current vessel owner. Remember, any boat stored in the water will have to have arrangements made up front to be hauled and the bottom cleaned so that an adequate inspection can be performed. Also any boat which has not been used for any length of time or stored should have the batteries fully charged and as many storage compartments empty as practical. The survey is only as good as the inspection so if the inspection is hampered by any of the above you can see the survey may not be as thorough as you want it to be when your spending your hard earned money. A good survey and heeding the recommendations of your surveyor can help you from getting into one of the "holes in the water" we've all heard of.
Damage Survey
This is the one no one likes to think about! This type of survey we usually perform for insurance claims handlers but they can be requested by individuals also. If there is no insurance claim and the repairs are being paid by the vessel owner, this type of survey can be helpful to get a report on the extent of damage and a estimate of repairs necessary to bring the vessel back to being safely usable again. This type is basically a damage report and states 1)extent of damage, 2) probable cause, 3) estimate the cost to repair the damage, 4) the estimated value of the vessel at the time of loss. 5) facts of the loss as stated by all involved parties, and 6) comparable estimates for repairs.
What is included
We provide the knowledge and the background to provide you a complete and comprehensive report as outlined above. Our survey reports include digital photos and two signed, sealed copies for your records. Our attendance during the sea trial is included to note handling and performance of operating systems, however we will not operate the boat. That service is available separately. Your report will include recommendations, some of which will be discussed at the time of inspection directly. All these recommendations are important to all interested parties as they usually pertain to the safety of the boat and her crew. Not every boat will inspect well. Understand that the water is an unforgiving place. Couple that with a less than experienced crew and an unseaworthy boat and you have a recipe for trouble. We will report the vessel conditions to the best of our ability for these reasons and moreover you should expect no less from us. They say love is blind, well sometimes it's that way when you find the boat of your dreams. We can be that professional opinion that may lead you to own the boat of your dreams rather than a "hole in the water into which one throws money".
